How to Name Characters

Characters are responsible for conveying the themes of stories and moving them forward. Due to this, many writers (including myself) overthink how to name them, turning what could be a fun aspect of writing into a daunting task. Fortunately, there are ways of naming characters, which make the process easier:

  1. Choose popular names from the era each character was born into. Click here, select a decade, then click Lookup to view names:  http://www.sheknows.com/baby-names/rankings/decade

  2. Consider the origins of your characters. Browse by origin, here: https://www.everydayfamily.com/baby-names/

  3. Give characters from unconventional settings unique names. Here are several lists of unusual names: https://nameberry.com/lists/category/unusual-names

Depending on the backgrounds of your characters, you can mix and match names (give characters traditional first names, with non-traditional last names or vice versa). You can also create a theme (every character is named after an artist or a mythological figure).

Next week, I will blog about selecting which genre to write in.
