How I Balance Multiple Writing Projects

Be ruthless about protecting your writing days.

- J.K. Rowling

Before I wrote my first prompt book, I experienced a severe form of writer's block; I felt uninspired, helpless, depressed, and frustrated by my inability to produce creative work.

After I overcame these feelings and began to write again, I was inundated with ideas. I went from not having any writing projects to having the Science Fiction Writing Series (14 prompt books), two novels, a graphic novel, and this weekly blog. I also have personal and collegiate responsibilities to tend to.

To diminish my feeling of being overwhelmed, and to ensure that my writing projects don't interfere with other responsibilities, I wrote them down, along with their deadlines. Then I selected feasible days to work on each one, and recorded them, along with additional notes, in my planner:

  • Weekly Blog - Ongoing - Wednesdays

  • Science Fiction Writing Series - December 31, 2017 - Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays

  • Graphic Novel - September 30, 2018 - Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays

  • 1st Novel - April 30, 2019 - Tuesdays and Thursdays

  • 2nd Novel - October 31, 2020 - Mondays and Fridays

Writing this list gave me direction and put me at ease. It also encouraged me to reach my deadlines.

Next week, I will share more news about upcoming books.
